WACO, TX, UNITED STATES, October 23, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Founder and Head of School of Harbor Christian Academy in Waco Draws on Decades of Special Education Experience to Champion Skills-Based, Inclusive Learning for Neurodivergent and Neurotypical Students
Waco, Texas – Kahrin Wessel is an educator, school leader, and advocate for inclusive education who serves as the Founder and Head of School of Harbor Christian Academy in Waco, Texas. She holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, and over a 40-year career, she has dedicated herself to creating learning environments where every student is valued and empowered to succeed. Harbor Christian Academy is one of Waco’s first fully inclusive private schools, welcoming neurodivergent and neurotypical students into a community built on achievement, belonging, and mutual respect. Her areas of focus include inclusive education, special education, neurodivergent student support, and educational leadership and school administration.
Kahrin did not originally plan to teach, but the encouragement of a college professor led her into the field, a decision that shaped a lifelong commitment to children with diverse learning needs. She taught in both public and private elementary schools before specializing in special education and earning certification in the field. She then spent 17 years at a residential treatment facility, supporting students with neurobehavioral challenges, autism, ADHD, and other exceptional learning needs. Her expertise in inclusive education, combined with advanced study in educational administration, prepared her to lead equitable, student-centered programs that recognize each learner’s unique strengths and potential.
Harbor Christian Academy grew out of both professional and personal challenges. After experiencing the closure of a private school and going through breast cancer treatment, Kahrin drew on her faith and resilience and chose to build something new. The closure was a difficult setback, yet it ultimately became the spark that inspired her to establish a school of her own. Starting with no startup funding, she founded the school around an educational model that emphasizes skills-based learning, individualized support, and equal opportunities for all students. Today, Harbor Christian Academy reflects her conviction that achievement and belonging can grow side by side, and that every learner deserves the chance to thrive.
Kahrin attributes her success to treating everyone with respect and dignity. The best career advice she ever received, and one she has lived by, was to befriend the janitors, cafeteria staff, and secretaries and treat them with the utmost respect, because they are often the people who help most when help is needed. She believes in treating people equitably and without prejudice, as every person has value regardless of position.
Her advice to young women entering education builds on that foundation. She encourages them to respect everyone from janitors to administrators, since each person plays a role in success, and to stay true to their values, as faith, integrity, and authenticity have guided her throughout her career. She urges them to follow their passion and find the area where they can make the greatest impact, just as she found her calling with children who learn differently. Above all, she advises resilience, noting that challenges are inevitable but can also open new doors, as her own decision to found a school after a closure demonstrates.
Kahrin sees navigating financial constraints while maintaining high-quality, inclusive education as one of the biggest challenges in her field. At the same time, she sees tremendous opportunity in pioneering inclusive education within the private sector. Her goal is to demonstrate that an inclusive model is not only possible but can deliver meaningful, high-quality learning experiences for children with diverse needs. For Kahrin, this work is both a professional mission and a personal calling rooted in decades of service to children who learn differently.
Her faith and relationship with God are her highest values, followed closely by building trust with people, acting with integrity, and being authentic. These principles shape how she leads her school and serves its families. Through her vision and perseverance, Kahrin Wessel has created a place where every child’s dignity is honored and where learning differences are met with belief, support, and opportunity.
